The Community School Model and History

Community Schools leverage community partnerships and resources so our campuses become hubs of support and opportunity for students, families and community members. By working with the community in this way, schools become better equipped to tap into the unique talents and gifts of every student, teacher, and staff member in our district, and can better break down barriers to student achievement.

In 2011, Oakland led the nation by announcing its intent to become the first Full Service Community School District. Five years later, Oakland continues to lead the way with its nationally recognized model for serving the whole child, ensuring that every student gains the skills and knowledge they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom: to graduate College, Career, & Community ready.

District-wide efforts to create systems and structures, such as those listed above, show how we have progressed in our goals to become a Full Service Community Schools District. Oakland Community School means the whole OUSD community coming together and supporting one another. - OUSD CSSS

KDA is a public community elementary school in East Oakland with an integrated focus on academics, youth development, family support, health and social services. We value our partnerships in the community and are proud to be a full-service school.

We offer classes from TK through 5th grade. Our learning methodology is centered on the holistic development of our students' breadth of knowledge through a standards-based, equity-driven, and culturally-responsive approach. With the support of our dedicated teachers and staff, KDA scholars are developing the socioemotional skills and perseverance they need to achieve their dreams and be the best version of themselves.

To remain true to our school's namesake, Fred T. Korematsu, and his legacy of activism, Korematsu Discovery Academy believes in social justice and equity for all of our students. KDA is a diverse school and we strongly believe in celebrating this diversity in and out of the classroom.
